How Does the Media Affect Teenage/Young women
70It's obvious that girls are consistently worried about their looks, but why does weight have to be something we worry about? Other than the apparent health issues, why does weight matter? Why are only skinny girls, or the very thin side of chubby, plus- sized girls good looking enough to be in magazines, on television, or in a calendar?
I'm not asking for someone to make a calendar spread for me, but what about the new generation? All they see on television are skinny girls who get their way no matter what they do. Bigger girls, on the other hand, are looked down upon, and picked on, by peers. This isn't right and we can blame the media.
MTV, which is supposed to mean "Music Television," started out by talking about music daily, showing music videos, and informing their viewers about up-and-coming bands. MTV should rename their channel "RTV- Reality Television." Why? Because mostly everything they show is reality TV.
Examples:
- The Real World
- Jersey Shore
- Teen Mom
- Teen Mom 2
- and more.
I bring this up because most of the females shown on any of these shows are very thin. The ones that aren't very thin? Not skinny, but on the very thin side of chubby. I'd like to see MTV either break out of the box and cut the stupid reality shows, or make one that doesn't degrade women.
I would love to see this already difficult like change for the new generation. Those of us who are big have life ten times harder than thin girls. Along with health risks, we have to deal with the ridicule daily.
Remember when this:
Used to be sexier than this?
I don't, but that is only because i wasn't born until the early 90's. I find bone-showing thin very disgusting. Honestly, i don't have an issue with girls who can eat a while big bag of chips and tons of candy in one day, and not gain a pound. Its the girls, who let the media get to them, and starve themselves, or throw up after every meal. But! It's not entirely their fault and I completely understand that. It's the media's fault. The media is telling girls today that it is not okay to be chubby at all.
I would also like to put some blame on males. While i know that some males don't mind chubby girls who have a great personality, it's the others who prefer stick thin figures. These are the males that make being larger, hard. Now, don't get me wrong, thinner girls are nice to look at, but because of how they look should not make big girls self-conscious. These males preferring stick thin over anything else is the reason why the media effects girls like me, and the way thin girls act.
If you have kids, one thing you can do is change how the media will effect them. No matter what their figure will look like, you can show your kids how media can effect them. In doing this you can also help show them how to notlet it affect them. Let your child know that no matter how they look, they just need to be real, that the media portrays a lot of flakiness. In the end, you and your kids will know what's right, and what's not.

I was born in the 70s. The second woman has a more attractive body. People like what they like, media or not.
